When we got to the island opposite the Memorial car park, we paddled round it, past some incredible properties on the waters edge. We both managed to stand up on the boards, despite both falling in a couple of times! The water wasn't shockingly cold, at 17.5 C, after falling in I even had a little swim in the river which was refreshing. We paddled along the river, taking in the scenery, lush green river banks and surprisingly clear water beneath us. Once we were out on the water, we paddled up towards the Memorial's car park. He made sure to thoroughly explain how to stand up, and what to do in an emergency, making sure to help with any beginners nerves. Nick is a qualified instructor, and gave us a quick tutorial before we set off, as Owen had never tried paddle boarding before (I am well seasoned in water sports). He gave us all the gear and a buoyancy aid before we got on the water. Owner Nick met us down by the riverside, and made sure we had a briefing with river rules and what to do in an emergency. If paddle boarding isn't your thing or you are scared of falling in the water, you could try kayaking instead, however I don't mind falling in the water I enjoy a little nature swim. You can book online, or head down to the riverside and if the equipment is free, you can hire it out there and then. I rented two paddleboards from Just SUP, which cost £20 each for an hour. The area is also a special historical site, where the Magna Carter was signed in 1215. There are paddling pools and a bouncy castle for children, and even French Brother's Victorian-esque riverboat cruises. We headed to Runnymede Pleasure Grounds near Egham, where you can make a full day of it and visit the Air Force memorials on Coopers Hill, then head down to the riverside kiosks for food and ice cream. There are plenty of places around Surrey to try different water sports, but I decided to take my boyfriend paddle boarding along the river Thames. When the weather is warm, you just want to make the most of it and enjoy the glorious (yet fleeting) sunshine while you can. With summer seemingly now in full swing, there are so many more options for date night beyond the cinema or a bar.
